You may have barely sorted out your winter wardrobe but in the fast moving world of fashion all the top designers have already paraded their spring/summer collections down the catwalks of the chicest cities in the world.

With Christmas fast approaching many of us will be focusing on investing in the perfect dresses for the office party but why not sit back and let me take you through the new season’s top trends? At least you will know what to buy in the January sales that will translate to next season!

Key colours for next season are romantic candy and pastel colours especially in green, pink, lilac and yellow. Muted tones are also a big hit with greys, dark blues, white, black and beiges featuring strongly in most shows. Mocha, sunset orange and cool blues are the muse of the forthcoming season. Shoes are all about statement. Gladiator style sandals make a comeback. Satchels and beaten brown leather bags will be big news especially teamed with the preppy college girl look. Jewellery should be striking. For inspiration think of exotic jewellery and Grecian style gold necklaces will also make an appearance.

The focus this spring/summer is definitely on simplicity. Celine featured beautifully cut statement dresses in orange and mocha and crisp tailoring. Next season it will be all about the cut. Aquascutum’s collection was awash with edgy statement pieces. Think of simple pieces you could put into a capsule wardrobe. Timeless pieces that exude effortless style. Think oversized shirts with a patent belt to cinch in the waist, ¾ length coats, blazers and classic white trousers. There is definitely a sporty twist to their collection and this will definitely be a trend that hits the high streets. Think simple sleeveless dresses in slinky jersey with a tulip hem. Try TopShop if you want to work this look. Their spring/summer collection embraced simple statement pieces with a sports luxe twist.

Another trend that will make an impact this spring is ethereal. Romantic dresses with ruffles in delicate fabrics such as chiffon and silk. This was best illustrated on John Galliano’s catwalk where it looked like a fairytale had come to life. Models wore pink dresses in chiffon adorned with sparkle, elegant coats with extra material to allow movement and floral maxi dresses. Fabrics were sheer, soft and feminine with metallic notes. Even the classic little black dress got a fairytale makeover with romantic ruffles and embellishments. Dior also captured the magic of this romantic look with embellished 20s style flapper dresses in pastel green.

Laid back, hippy-esque flair will also make a splash next season after making a notable appearance in many shows. D&G featured chiffon layered floral print maxi dresses and oversized t-shirts with embellishments that wouldn’t look out of place on the fields of Glastonbury.

Tailoring will also carry through but with a fresh edge. Dior featured pinstripe suits and waistcoats teamed with bowler hats. Blazers are a key item for spring and summer so hang onto yours if you have invested in one. Emporio Armani gave the blazer a glamorous twist by making it a longer length and more fitted so it could be worn as a statement dress. Designers definitely flirted with the preppy look. Luella even had their models in pig tails and glasses. D&G also gave a nod to the trend with jumpers with shirts worn underneath and brown leather bags. Think pleated skirts, blazers and cardigans.

  1. dear Gemma
    have a nice day

we want from you to inform us the colors leather of the shoes and sandals of the fashion summer 2008 .

    with my best regards

  2. Hi Rabih Hammoud,
Thanks for your comment. The main trends for spring summer 2008 with regards to shoes will be gladiator stlye sandals in soft tan leathers. Also mix shoe genres. Think gladiator sandals crossed with a boot, or sandals mixed with a boot as seen on the catwalks of Chloe, Balenciaga and Givenchy. In terms of colour of leather, tan will be big, metallics and vivid colour. Shoes for spring/summer are eye catching in contrast to the edgy simplicity of the clothes. In terms of general shoe trends don’t forget this season its all about the heel. Whether it have an edgy cut out detail or shape. Embellishment is big too. Think studs on Gladiator sandals. Also classic brogues will make the transition from autumn/winter to spring/summer thanks to fashion week’s nod to the preppy college girl trend. I’d say invest in a tan leather pair as it is more summery than black or grey.

I hope this has helped. If you want any further advice please feel free to contact me again!

    Thanks for your interest,
    Gemma Douthwaite

ps- I will be doing a feature on spring/summer shoe trends with pictures and where you can buy them and the cost so hopefully this will help too!
